Former Argentine Defense Minister Criticizes Military Appointment

Buenos Aires, November 22 (NA) -- National deputy-elect for Peronism and former Minister of Defense, Agustín Rossi, qualified this Saturday as a "setback" in democratic terms the appointment of Lieutenant General Carlos Presti at the head of the defense portfolio.

"It is a significant setback in what democracy has built over the last 40 years, which has been the civilian leadership of defense," Rossi considered in statements to the Argentine News Agency (NA).

According to him, the government's decision casts doubt on whether the new minister will act as a representative of political power before the military structure or if the opposite will happen.

"The enthronement of a military man generates logical doubts," he stated in dialogue with NA.

For Rossi, another worrying issue is that the Armed Forces are "directly involved in political management," which means they will have an impact on specific defense policies.

"Now they will have to assume that they are co-responsible for the starvation wages that their comrades are receiving, because they put one of their own in the Ministry of Defense," pointed out the former Chief of Staff.

President Javier Milei announced this Saturday that Alejandra Monteoliva and Presti will assume as new Ministers of Security and Defense, respectively.
